The incident took place at Bonjeni Primary School in Esigodini.
Matabeleland South Police Spokesperson, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe, confirmed that Nothando Nharingo was arrested but was later released pending investigations.
Nharingo was arrested in Bulawayo and was transferred back to Esigodini for further investigations.
“It is not clear whether she killed the child hence her release from custody. We are still investigating circumstances surrounding the matter,’’ said Inspector Dzirutwe.
It is alleged that on 27 October this year the boy’s grandmother, Ms Ketty Mlotshwa, left the boy in the care of Nharingo.The accused is alleged to have made the infant drink paraffin.
When Ms Mlotshwa returned from work she found the boy ill and smelling of paraffin.She took him to a clinic in the area for treatment and was later referred to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo.
However, the child was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.Nharingo is reported to have sought refuge at an unknown place after learning of the child’s death.
The deceased boy’s father, Mr Timothy Garadhi, apprehended the girl and took her to the police after receiving a tip-off of the girl’s whereabouts.
