Zimbabwean cultural exchange and Fundraiser featuring members of Masaisai mbira and dance troupe.Saturday May 16th. 6pm-11pm
An evening of Zimbabwean storytelling, singing, mbira and marimba music, politics, and organic Zimbabwean food. The night will feature indigenous music and dance, spirituality, and perspective on how and why Zimbabwe is now struggling desperately for survival. Come and listen to the healing and powerful sounds of the mbira dzaVadzimu, taste the delicious and nutritious home cooked combination of sadza and greens, dance away the calories, and find out about what is happening in Zimbabwe and how we can help. Featured artists and organizers are from the Masaisai mbira and dance crew in Toronto. Suggested admission is $25. Zimbabweans are invited to come and share in the evening for a suggested $10.
Sponsored by Bathurst United Church (416.921.4967) and the Social Justice Committee of Bloor St. United Church. Proceeds will go to Kufunda Learning Village and Tariro, Zimbabwean NGOs. Kufunda is working in rural areas to support indigenous modes of self-reliance and life-affirming community. Tariro focuses on orphaned girls in rural and urban areas and education. Both groups are working to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
