Harare- Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country’s largest mobile phone operator, is changing its prefix to 077, effective October 02.
A company spokesman said this was in line with global trends and regulations set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Postal and elecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe.
"To allow a smooth changeover to the new 077 number, customers will be able to make calls to Econet numbers using both the current 091 and new 077 codes until November 2," he said.
However, after this period, a call to an Econet number will only be possible by using the new 077 prefix.
"Only the first three digits of your current number are changing, from 091 to 077. The other seven digits of your phone number remain the same," added the spokesman.
The changes conform to new trends in global numbering standards set by the ITU, an agency of the United Nations that regulates the global information and communication technology industry.
Recently, the company announced Zimbabwe’s most comprehensive per-second billing across all networks and international calls.
Econet also unveiled a US$60 million loan to expand its network and product offering, including fourth generation services and a mobile virtual network operators’ deal with the United Kingdom’s Orange.
