Alexander Norman Johnson of Sunningdale, pleaded guilty to fraud charges when he appeared before a Harare magistrate Mr Munamato Mutevedzi last Friday. He was sentenced to five years in prison with one year suspended.

Before sentence was passed Johnson pleaded with the court to be lenient with him saying he was destitute, stranded and facing family problems when one Glazner Muchabaiwa approached him and enticed him into committing the offence.

He said Muchabaiwa asked him to telephone Windmill Pvt Ltd’s marketing and sales manager on the pretext that he was the director of an NGO called Becker Foundation based in Binga that wanted to buy 240 tonnes of fertilizer.

However, it was later discovered that the NGO was non-existent. The police later arrested Johnson who led them to Centenary where only 38 bags of compound D were recovered.
